English: Writing
INTENT:
At Tregony School, we aim to equip all children with the basic skills that they require to be life-long learners; it is our intent that writing across the curriculum will inspire, engage and challenge all pupils. Through a text-based approach, and a focus on vocabulary acquisition, we aim for all children to see themselves as writers. Our intentions for writing are as follows:
- Write for a variety of purposes
- See themselves as real writers
- Take ownership of their writing
- See writing as an interesting and enjoyable process
- Acquire the ability to plan, evaluate and improve their written work
IMPLEMENTATION:
We believe that, in order to write high quality texts, children need to read high quality texts. It is our intention to immerse pupils within a text for them to fully understand the vocabulary and structure of the story. Therefore, at Tregony School, in Key Stage One and Lower Key Stage Two, we teach using Talk 4 Writing, an approach developed by Pie Corbett based on a cycle of imitation, innovation and inventing.
Beyond Talk 4 Writing, from year 4, children’s writing journey is based on a text-based approach. Children will follow a sequence of identifying features in a text, comparing texts, explicit grammar teaching, planning, writing and editing and improving their own writing. Books for this are carefully chosen to expose our children to a range of lifestyles, experiences and to gather a deeper understanding of the plurality of human kind.
Tregony School follows the Read Write Inc. scheme for teaching spelling. This starts when pupils are ready, in year 2, as a continuation of the Read Write Inc. phonics scheme. Through the scheme, children are taught relevant spelling rules as well as those words that are statutory for each year group.
We use LetterJoin for handwriting. Handwriting lessons are delivered on a frequent basis and the skill of handwriting is reinforced across all lessons.

We believe that all children should have opportunities to:
- Be exposed to high quality texts including imaginative vocabulary.
- Write from a range of genres across fiction, non-fiction and poetry.
- Write for a range of purposes.
- Use writing to demonstrate their learning through cross-curricular writing.
