Intent, Implementation and Impact Report for Physical Education (PE)
Intent
At Tregony Community Primary School, our aim is to develop the child as a whole, focussing on the physical, emotional and social well-being of our children, as well as the technical side of sport. Physical Education is an integral part of our curriculum and we aim to ensure that it is accessible to all pupils, giving them an opportunity to achieve their personal best and also an understanding of how to keep themselves healthy. At Tregony, we provide pupils with different opportunities to gain life skills, such as teamwork and perseverance, as well as important skills that help to keep us safe, like swimming and water safety.
Implementation
At Tregony, we ensure that all pupils receive two hours of P.E a week and that they are able to access clubs outside of the school day. We also try to ensure that a large number of pupils have the opportunity to compete for the school at some point during the academic year. Pupils know why it is important to warm up before any physical activity and can choose a warm up relevant to the lesson. In our 'sport' P.E lessons we focus on a different area of Physical Education where pupils learn 'teaching points' (T.Ps) which help them to improve their skills. We also teach the Real P.E and Real Gym curriculums, which are based on the important A.B.C skills and provide children with the foundation for every sport that they participate in. There are a number of different sporting opportunities that we offer outside of P.E lessons. These include: Year 6 sailing, swimming across the school, class camps, KS2 surfing, Year 5/6 Bikeability levels 1&2 and EYFS/KS1 Balanceability.
Impact
At Tregony Community Primary School, we ensure that our P.E curriculum is progressive and allows children to develop their A.B.C skills (agility, balance and co-ordination), understanding that they can be used in all areas of sport. Pupils regularly take part in peer and self-assessment, allowing them to improve their skills and giving them the opportunity to praise one another for what went well. At the end each half term sport unit, pupils compete in class matches where they are assessed on the T.Ps, teamwork, sportsmanship and their knowledge of the sporting rules. At Tregony, pupils understand why it is important to keep active and exercise regularly as well as how to lead a healthy lifestyle. All pupils understand the values and importance of fair play and being a good sportsperson. We aim for Year 6 pupils to leave school with the skills to self-rescue in the water and swim at least 25 metres competently. We hope that our pupils enjoy P.E and develop a love of sport, and physical activity, that they pursue in future life outside of primary school.
